We were briefed to deliver landscape design to enhance a vibrant new development that’s set to become a benchmark for community and liveability in Cairo. The area was previously defined by poor social interaction, lacking in climate-responsive, context-relevant design and spatial arrangements. Our task was to help create a new integrated community that promotes walking and cycling, improves health and wellbeing, and enables social cohesion.
In our response, we proposed a series of interconnected, richly diverse and inviting green spaces. We also aimed to provide opportunities for leisure and recreation for all ages. The landscaping was conceived to sit within a wider scheme that prioritises greenery, from private gardens to semi-public residential greenspace and parks. We also located community amenities at the heart of each residential zone, making it a place where all residents feel cater for and connected.
With an emphasis on outdoor spaces and programmes for multiple users, our designs help to promote social integration within the new development. Plays areas, community gardens, markets and event space mean young and old alike can access and enjoy the new site. Walkable, cycle-friendly neighbourhoods are designed to minimise car use, while tree planting provides shade and creates a cooler environment for residents. Our rich planting palette is also responsive to local climatic conditions, with numerous native and drought-tolerant species to help reduce overall irrigation requirements.
