Solution
Stavanger Airport, Sola is Norway’s third-busiest airport and the principal aviation gateway for southwest Norway. Benoy’s commercial strategy review and space planning study covered a 4,400 m² scope of the terminal’s retail and food-and-beverage environment, aiming to maximise commercial exposure, improve dwell opportunities and better serve arriving and departing passengers across a constrained footprint, while adapting the commercial estate to evolving traveller patterns.
Repositioning the commercial estate around the passenger route
The strategy reorganises the terminal’s commercial mix around its unique passenger flow constraints. The Arrivals Duty Free area is expanded, with its frontage repositioned closer to the international passenger route to maximise visibility and footfall. Office space is repurposed to create additional seating and dwell areas adjacent to retail and F&B units, supporting arriving passengers and pre-check-in departing flows. In the international sector, an underused lounge is replaced with an F&B unit, drawing natural light into the gate area, expanding seating near departure gates and presenting new frontages onto the passenger route. In the domestic sector, an F&B island is removed to release space for rotational pop-up units aimed at frequent flyers, widening the circulation corridor and creating capacity for tenant turnover.
Outcomes across the passenger journey
The reorganised layout delivers a more flexible commercial environment with greater dwell capacity and improved spend-per-passenger potential. The expanded duty-free and versatile seating reach across both arriving and departing passengers, while the spatial reorganisation widens circulation corridors and lifts commercial visibility in parts of the terminal that had been underused. The strategy supports operational efficiency, revenue growth and adaptability to changing traveller demographics.
