Challenge

Set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, ICONSIAM transforms the Bangkok riverfront into a new global attraction for Thailand. This prestigious project includes a contemporary shopping mall, a luxury retail mall, a 3,500 seat auditorium and two waterfront residential condominium towers. As the interior designer on the retail components of the project, a key challenge was ensure footfall through all of the 8 levels of retail as well as F&B.

Solution

It was essential to create a world class contemporary shopping destination that had a strong sense of Thai essence’ in order to attract both local and international visitors. A narrative based on the symbolic lotus flower and the Chao Phraya River inspires the interior design. The river body inspired the soft fluid forms of the plan which wraps around two feature internal retail buildings, the cladding design is influenced by the lotus flower.

Result

The scheme opened to the public at the end of 2018, and is set to become a new icon for the city, a symbol of national pride. To date, it has won Best Store Design of the Year’ at the World Retail Awards (2019),‘Best Shopping Centre’ at MAPIC (2019) and the Bronze World Interiors News (WIN) award for Best Retail Design (2021).
