Reacquainting Londoners with an architectural icon
Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most recognisable buildings, a Grade II* listed Art Deco structure that sat empty for nearly four decades before opening as a mixed-use destination in October 2022. Benoy was appointed to design the wayfinding strategy for the redeveloped site, creating a system that felt continuous with the building’s established design language and heritage.
A topographic logic drawn from the building
The wayfinding system is anchored in a typographic grid derived from the proportions of the power station façade. The organising theme is ‘fusion’, a direct reference to the building’s own history: Battersea A and Battersea B were constructed in two stages between 1929 and 1955, two distinct stations united in a single structure. The duality became the conceptual foundation for a core set of typographic and product-based principles, applied consistently across all wayfinding components throughout the public realm, to knit the whole site together as a cohesive destination.
A new chapter for Battersea
The refurbished power station is now a shopping, entertainment and social destination, hosting public events and seasonal pop-ups throughout the year. The wider masterplan includes residential buildings and a newly landscaped public realm. The wayfinding design unites these internal and external elements across the masterplan and creates adaptable wayfinding systems capable of being updated as the destination evolves.
