Benoy collaborates with HKU on a Landscape Architecture program

Empowering the next generation is a key responsibility at Benoy! Our Hong Kong Studio recently partnered with the Faculty of Architecture’s Division of Landscape Architecture at Hong Kong University (HKU) for the Career Discovery in Landscape Architecture (CDLA) programme, inspiring young minds to explore this dynamic field.

During this 2‑day event, 32 high school students aged 15 – 17 gained insights into the operations of a design studio and learned about the foundational concepts of landscape architecture.

On Day 1, Teri Tsang, Director and Hong Kong Studio Lead, introduced Benoy and highlighted several real-life projects. She was joined by Sunny Yu, Interior Design Associate Director, and our Landscape Architecture team — Howe Chan, Landscape Designer, and Yini Zhang and Luke Wan, both Senior Landscape Designer. Together, they showcased Benoy’s work across architecture, interior design and landscape architecture disciplines.

On Day 2, the students returned to the studio to create a small installation after learning about the essential principles of landscape architecture and its vital role in shaping communities. A highlight of the workshop was the creation of an installation using bamboo, a material commonly used in Hong Kong’s construction industry. Students applied traditional scaffolding methods and weaving techniques learned during the program to enhance their designs. Each group developed their concepts through sketches and models, which they presented to the judges from Benoy for valuable feedback and insights.

Special thanks to Francisco Cevallos Barragan from HKU for leading this meaningful program, and kudos to Cheryl Yuen from Benoy for coordinating the entire event. Appreciation also goes to judges Nick Chan and Kan Srisawat from Benoy, as well as mentors Danny Yang, Doby Yu, Minyi Ling, Peixi He and Lu Wan.

About the CDLA program

The Career Discovery in Landscape Architecture (CDLA) program provides a unique experiential learning opportunity aimed at exploring the fundamental elements of landscape architecture. Participants, aged 15 – 17, engage in hands-on activities with design firms, complemented by lectures on key topics and practical workshops. Field trips in Hong Kong deepen their understanding by offering real-world context, while exhibitions and presentations enable them to showcase their design work. This comprehensive approach equips students with the knowledge and skillset needed to tackle the pressing challenges faced by our evolving societies.
