The annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) was held on 6 – 8 November, 2024, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. Representing Benoy were Qin Pang, Director and Head of the Shanghai Studio, and Terence Seah, Director and Head of Hong Kong, Singapore and Shenzhen.
During the festival, Qin presented the Lingang Open Zone Station TOD project live to the judges and audience. The project was shortlisted as a finalist in the Competition Entries under the Future Projects category, and the project had also been announced as a winner of the WAFX Awards in the Smart Cities category.
Qin made a statement during the WAFX Smart City Category panel discussion:
“There is no single smart city solution, and urban problems vary. From the renewal of old urban core areas in Europe to the planning of new cities in the Middle East to the core complex buildings in China’s Satellite City, we encounter different urban backgrounds and mechanisms. Therefore, starting from common sense, seeking truth from facts, respecting the general background of the project, and earnestly discovering and solving the specific pain points and problems of each project are the only things we can do as architects and the only things worth doing. Architects should also learn not to be obsessed with the ultimate solution, sometimes provide the right general direction, and fully trust the self-evolution ability of the city as an ecosystem so that the project has the opportunity and possibility of self-iteration and development.”
The Lingang Open Zone Station TOD exemplifies Benoy’s commitment to innovative urban development, showcasing a vibrant mixed-use hub that integrates transportation, commerce, and public space. This project serves as a vital connection point for the region, enhancing accessibility for both local residents and visitors.
At the event, Terence and Qin engaged in various workshops, critique sessions, and networking opportunities designed to foster collaboration within the architectural community.
The 17th edition of WAF is the world’s largest festival and live awards competition dedicated to celebrating architectural excellence. This year, over 450 finalists presented their projects across multiple categories, with a jury of 140 representatives from 68 countries evaluating the entries. The festival’s theme, “Tomorrow,” focused on the future of architecture, urban design, landscape and interiors, exploring the impacts of global crises, digital technologies, and cultural shifts.
Launched in WAF’s 10th year, the WAFX Awards highlighted 33 exceptional future projects that embrace cutting-edge design addressing major world issues, recognising architects who are pushing boundaries across various categories, including Ageing and Health and Smart Cities.
Benoy’s participation in WAF underscores our dedication to shaping the future of the built environment and enhancing urban spaces.
