Benoy Director, Qin Pang, Recognised as one of Shanghai’s Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Architects”

Honouring Excellence: Outstanding Architects Recognised

On 11 November, the Architectural Society of Shanghai China (ASSC) hosted its 70th Annual Celebration” and the 2023 Annual Academic Conference,” along with the International Architecture Culture Week,” at the Primius Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao. 

During the event, the ASSC announced its second list of Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Architects in Shanghai,” featuring Qin Pang, Benoy Director and Head of Shanghai Studio, as the sole architect from a foreign-owned design firm. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Qin Pang and all the other outstanding architects recognised on this prestigious occasion!


Celebrating Architectural Excellence: A Five-Year Cadence

Established in 2018, the list of Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Architects in Shanghai” is released every five years. Its purpose is to acknowledge a cohort of young and middle-aged architects who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and made significant contributions in the field of urban and rural construction. The initiative aims to inspire the enterprising and innovative spirit of young and middle-aged architects in Shanghai.


Rigorous Judgment: Identifying 23 Honourees

The jury comprised experts from prominent design institutes, design firms, and universities. They came together to evaluate the architects who applied or were recommended, considering various aspects from a professional standpoint. The finalists were selected through online voting, and after several rounds of rigorous judging, the final 23 honourees were chosen.

Over his nearly 30-years career as a professional architect, Qin has dedicated himself to exploring the intricate relationship between architecture, society, and nature. His aspiration is to find integrated solutions that address architectural challenges at various scales and levels.


Guiding Principles: Spirit of Openness, Fairness, and Impartiality

This year, the expert jury for the Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Architects in Shanghai” displayed a fervent commitment to honouring knowledge and talent. In the spirit of openness, fairness, and impartiality, they carefully examined each finalist’s profile and objectively evaluated and discussed each aspect in terms of their design concepts, architectural practices and societal contributions. Following these deliberations, the jury exchanged views and ultimately voted by secret ballot to determine the final list of honourees.


Nurturing Architectural Culture

The aim of this award is to spotlight a cadre of outstanding architects and inspire others to distinguish themselves, fostering a culture of innovative architecture that propels the industry into the future while respecting its rich heritage.


Recognising Excellence

During the 70th anniversary celebrations, Long Xiu, President of the Architectural Society of China, and Chang Qing, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of the ASSC, presented certificates and awards to the second batch of Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Architects in Shanghai.” 

We would like to commend all recipients on their bold and creative contributions to architecture and academic research, their commitment to excellence and success, and express hope that they will continue making even greater contributions to the field of urban and rural construction.


Milestone Celebration: ASSC’s 70th Anniversary

2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the ASSC, joined by over 30 sister societies both in China and abroad. Notable entities include the Architectural Society of China, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Jiangsu Civil Engineering & Architectural Society, the Zhejiang Province Civil Engineering & Architectural Society, the Shanghai Green Building Council, the Shanghai Exploration & Design Trade Association, RICS, CIOB and AIA presented congratulatory letters at the conference. 

The day was concluded under the guidance of the Architectural Society of China, the Shanghai Association for Science & Technology, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Shanghai International Culture Association, the Shanghai Coordination Center for the World Cities Day and the Regional Cooperation Office of the Yangtze River Delta.
