Exploring Technological Innovation in Architecture at the WATIC
On 20 June 2023, Yejia Zhu, Project Director of Benoy’s Shanghai Studio, was invited to give a keynote speech at the World Architecture Technology Innovation Beijing Forum. The forum, organised by the World Architecture Technology Innovation Conference (WATIC) organising committee, took place at the China International Exhibition Centre (new exhibition hall) in Beijing.
The conference focuses on the application of digital technology, green low-carbon solutions, and urban renewal in the construction industry to accelerate the development of traditional professionals involved in the construction industry, capitalise on the historic opportunities brought by the latest technological revolution and industrial changes, and take initiative in new economic development.
Keynote Speech by Yejia Zhu: Achieving Net Zero and Sustainable Design for a Greener Future
Speaking on the topic of “changing without making changes”, Yejia Zhu shared with the audience a practical case study on how to use technological innovation and green and sustainable design to enhance people’s wellbeing and contribute to society. “‘Without making changes’ here refers specifically to ‘net zero,’ which means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible and reabsorbing any remaining emissions from the atmosphere, such as through the oceans and forests,” she explains.
On the other hand, ‘changing’ refers to the adjustments we need to make in terms of our production, consumption and transportation methods. The energy sector is responsible for approximately three-quarters of today’s greenhouse gas emissions and places a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. By replacing heavily polluting forms of power generation, such as coal, natural gas, and oil, with renewable energy sources like wind or solar power, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions. As professionals in the construction industry, which accounts for 38% of the world’s carbon emissions, we must strive to minimise disruptions in our designs in order to help transform cities into eco-friendly living environments.”
Using three case studies, Yejia Zhu further explains how to respond to the different changes we face through precise design.
Revitalizing Urban Space: No. 6 Department Store Regeneration in Xujiahui District
For the No. 6 Department Store regeneration project in Shanghai’s Xujiahui district, Benoy’s team focused on enhancing the interior three-dimensional space, breaking away from traditional commercial interior design, while transforming the urban façade into a reflection of the shopping district.
The design emphasises the interaction and connection with the city, along with additional features such as direct access to the metro, a 24-hour bridge to the city, and access to the roof at each level. It also includes a gently sloping tunnel over the “Hui” urban plaza, a visitor experience centre, and an ecological “pocket” garden to enhance cultural integration and social exchange. These elements balance and complement the functional spatial requirements of the shopping area, improving visitor experience.
Revitalizing Urban Heritage: Regeneration of Ningbo Deji Lane Historic District
The regeneration of Ningbo Deji Lane historic district is an expression of respect for the spirit of the “Yong merchants” who opened the port and for the birthplace of Shikumen architecture. The development aims to revitalize a forgotten urban community by creating a multi-faceted, organic, and vibrant avenue within a fully preserved historic alleyway.
Positioned within the “core” area and surrounded by growing businesses, the development meets the demands of urban life by injecting lifestyle and culture. The new elements are carefully woven into the original urban fabric to meet the spatial demands of modern functions while maintaining a simplistic and “homogenous” architectural expression.
Transforming Culture and Image: Alibaba Jiangsu Headquarters in Nanjing
The planning, design and construction of the Alibaba Jiangsu Headquarters in Nanjing revolve around the development and transformation of the company’s culture. The company’s recent split into six separate business units has necessitated a re-examination of all aspects of the original design in collaboration with the company’s executives.
The focus has been on carrying out a “renovation” design that considers the pace of construction on the site, emphasising functional spaces and refining the majority of the external façade. The approach aims to “declutter” and refine the design to transform the company’s image from “dynamic” to “stable.”
The WATIC World Architecture Technology Innovation Beijing Forum
WATIC is a response to the development goals outlined in China’s “14th Five-Year Plan”, with a focus on promoting the high-quality development of the construction industry, deepening structural reform on the supply side, advancing sustainable practices, and fostering innovation and development in the field of global construction technology.
The conference is hosted by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), AIA (American Institute of Architects), and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). It is supported by the China Architectural Culture Centre and the East China branch of the China Architecture & Building Press, in partnership with WATIC.
The WATIC World Architecture Technology Innovation Beijing Forum took place concurrently with the China International Urban Construction Exposition.
The forum welcomed esteemed guests from various organizations including the Technology and Industrialisation Development Centre of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, China Architecture Design and Research Group, China Academy of Building Research, China Academy of Building Standard Design, Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, along with other relevant government departments and leading institutes. Additionally, representatives from AECOM and BDP, attending were in attendance and delivered speeches at the conference.
