Involved since the concept planning stage, Benoy provided architectural and interior design services for the Euro America Financial City (EFC) Mall in Hangzhou. In pursuit of high quality, with the cooperation and perseverance of all parties, the project took eight years from concept to completion. Located in the core area of CBD in Hangzhou’s Future Science and Technology City, the EFC Mall is the largest city complex in Hangzhou and a premium commercial landmark, with 19 LEED gold-grade certified office buildings over 100 meters as the centrepiece.
The EFC Mall is a mixed-use development, comprising a LEED gold-grade certified office building, an international five-star hotel, a large-scale brand business centre, an upscale serviced apartment, and a high-end environmentally friendly urban residence, all of which were planned around a central park.
The site is seamlessly connected to Chuangjing Road Station of Metro Line 5 and Line 19, and connected to Hangzhou East and West Railway Stations, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport and Alibaba, thanks to the double subways . Benoy brought together its placemaking experts to implement the design of the retail podium spread across three separate plots.
As a mixed-use development that integrates diverse functions, the project team wanted to ensure the retail podium was the main artery of the scheme. Through careful planning, the design created an articulation between the exterior and interior elements, forming a seamless inter-zonal design language for the development. It also enhanced the interaction between the extensive central park residing in the middle of the five sites, conveying a sense of people coming together like a waterway flowing through the landscape.
In terms of the exterior design, the façade adopts the textures and lines from the natural environment, and the perforations in the façade offer glimpses of the outdoors. Yet, the interior design takes on a modern aesthetic with articulated detailing and a rich pallet of luxury materials such as bronze and natural marble stone.
A 200 m commercial corridor encircles the parkland, linking the retail podiums, with three double-height glass pavilions situated at the top. These three glass pavilions designed by Benoy formed the iconic structure and featured spaces for tenants within the EFC Mall.
Since its completion, the EFC Mall is a thriving destination that celebrates the best of Hangzhou’s lush landscape and modern creativity. Furthermore, as the first overseas returnee community in China, the EFC Mall has proved to be one of the landmarks for China’s top 500 companies. In a city of vitality and innovation, this vibrant project is changing the public’s perception of a million-square-meter complex and honouring its charm to the world.
