Entitled “C Journey, Architecture Towards Future”, the UABB International Low Carbon City Exhibition in Longgang District attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, online and in-person since its opening in December 2022. The three-month event concluded with a keynote forum, “The Future is Now — Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City Starts Afresh”, and a closing ceremony on 6 March 2023.
The Urbanism/Architecture Bi-City Biennale (the “UABB”) is a biennial cultural event takes place in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It is the world’s first and large-scale exhibition focused on architecture and urbanisation. Since its establishment in 2005, the UABB has emerged as a prominent event with global presence and recognition. Its success is attributed to the collective joint efforts of its Organising Committee, Academic Committee, curators, and exhibitors from both local and international spheres.
The International Low Carbon City Exhibition in Longgang District is one of the seven (“1+6”) sub-venue of the 9th UABB (Shenzhen). The exhibition was led by the Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Longgang District, organised by the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research, and co-organised by China Resources (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. and Overseas Chinese Town Group. It was jointly curated by Syracuse University and the Shenzhen Guanzhu Architectural Development Centre, under the guidance of the People’s Government of Longgang District and the Organising Committee of the 9th UABB.
The exhibition welcomed more than 100 exhibitors, consisting of top universities, leading technology companies, renowned design institutions, pioneering architecture studios and several other teams. The exhibition explored full-lifecycle, whole-process services and cross-disciplinary collaboration from three perspectives: architecture, integration and community. Structured into three categories: “C+ Construction — Industry Towards Future”, “C+ Convergence — Sharing Superposition” and “C+ Community — Low Carbon Lifestyle”, presenting a tech-infused, vibrant, entertaining and inclusive environment that resembles an interactive carnival. The three-month exhibition attracted more than 200,000 online and in-person visitors.
Located in the “C+ Convergence — Sharing Superposition” area, Benoy’s booth was among those of other prominent international and Chinese design companies and universities. Exhibiting its strengths in creative commercial space design and its commitment to enhancing the well-being of urban communities, Benoy also showcased case studies, VR demonstrations, 3D printed models and other materials to illustrate how commerce-related public space are evolving beyond their traditional functions of retail and entertainment. Today, commercial spaces serve as a sanctuary where people can unwind and recharge, both physically and mentally. They are recognized as vital components of the sustainable development processes, offering people unique and evolving experiences over time, particularly in the case of public spaces within commercial spaces.
Throughout the exhibition, various unique sessions took place, covering topics such as technology advancement in architecture, collaborative design, creating sustainable campuses, launching a metaverse platform, and unveiling the low-carbon home application. One of the most groundbreaking sessions of the “Cross-Disciplinary Architecture for the Future” exhibition was the Metaverse X Green Architecture Forum, which effectively showcased the exhibition’s core ideas in a metaverse approach and encouraging visitors to adopt a green lifestyle.
