World Architecture Day and World Cities Day | David Jones Elizabeth Street Flagship Store

To mark World Architecture Day and World Cities Day both celebrated in October, Benoy is proud to showcase a series of projects that capture our response to the transformation of our economies and societies. Through projects which encompass social, cultural, environmental and commercial sustainability, we demonstrate the continuing evolution of the built environment into urban spaces which are sustainable, inclusive and resilient.

Today we are featuring the David Jones Elizabeth Street Flagship Store located in Sydney, Australia.

Stepping into the new David Jones is like taking a journey from the 19th century to the 21st. At a time when many department stores all over the world are facing significant changes, Benoy’s re-envisioning of the David Jones’ Flagship Store in Sydney marks a new chapter in its 180-year old history.

Our design strategy involved a series of delicate and thoughtful interior modifications, which strengthened the relationship of the building with its urban context and flows into a well-curated interior experience. The main concept for the interior design is Windows to the World’, where each level becomes a portal to transport the customer into a new world.

Preserving building’s heritage and grandeur, we transformed one of the world’s oldest department stores for the modern era, where it continues to inspire and excite, providing a premium retail experience like no other.

Terence Seah, Director and Head of Hong Kong, Singapore and Shenzhen, explains the vision behind the transformational design.
