Return to Future Thinking

Can you tell us a bit about your position at Benoy?

I joined Benoy just over four years ago as a Senior Architect, and since then, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to a diverse range of hospitality projects. My role spans concept design to project coordination, working closely with internal teams, consultants, and clients to deliver solutions that are both imaginative and grounded in practical execution. I focus on aligning creative design with the project vision and client objectives, ensuring outcomes that are not only visually compelling but also functional and deliverable.

What do you love most about what you do?

I enjoy the collaborative nature of the profession. Every project brings together a wide range of disciplines and perspectives, and being part of that dynamic process — from early concept through to completion — is incredibly rewarding. There’s something very fulfilling about seeing a design evolve from sketches on paper to a built form that people can walk through and use. And of course, the constant learning. Every project, every site, every client brings new challenges and opportunities to grow.

What inspired you to pursue architecture as a career?

My inspiration to pursue architecture came quite naturally. I’ve had the opportunity to live in different places around the world and travel extensively, which exposed me to a wide range of cultures, urban environments, and architectural styles from an early age. On a more personal level, both of my parents work in the building industry, so I grew up around conversations about construction, design, and problem-solving.

You were recently involved in the Sofitel Legend Pyramids project. Can you tell us more about this project?

The Sofitel Legend Pyramids was a unique and complex architectural endeavour. Its design centred around three courtyards, meticulously positioned to capture breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Giza Pyramids. Bold and striking, the architectural concept pays homage to Egypt’s rich history, drawing direct inspiration from the monumental geometry of the pyramids themselves.

Midway through the project, a significant shift occurred with the introduction of a new hotel operator and the elevation of the hotel to an ultra-luxury brand. This transition required a thoughtful recalibration of the design and technical specifications to align with the new operator’s brand standards and elevated quality expectations. Despite these changes, we successfully preserved the integrity of the original, approved design, ensuring that the project’s core vision remained intact.

What was your role in the project?

My role in the project evolved over time. I initially joined as a Senior Architect, focusing on design development and coordination across disciplines. As the project progressed, I took on increased responsibilities and moved into the role of Project Lead, where I oversaw the design team and took on a broader management role, supporting both design direction and project delivery.

What was your design process?

Benoy had already secured the project through a competition before I joined it, so the initial concept was in place. My role focused on developing and refining the design to align with the brief, site conditions, and client expectations. Regardless of the starting point, my approach always involves understanding the context and user needs to help deliver a grounded, functional, and compelling design.

What’s unique about this project?

The views. Perched in a location that offers breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the pyramids, the project takes full advantage of its extraordinary setting to create an experience unlike any other. From the moment guests arrive, they are enveloped in an atmosphere where the grandeur of ancient history meets the comfort and sophistication of contemporary luxury. These stunning vistas serve not only as a visual focal point but also as an emotional and cultural anchor, allowing visitors to feel deeply connected to the timeless spirit of Egypt.

A key design element, the strategic orientation and positioning of three distinct courtyards, plays a central role in shaping this experience. Each courtyard has been thoughtfully crafted to frame the landscape in unique ways, guiding the eye toward the pyramids while simultaneously offering curated sensory moments. From the gentle rustle of native plantings and the subtle fragrance of local flora to the carefully designed acoustics that enhance ambient sounds, the courtyards orchestrate a multisensory journey. This intentional layering of sensory experiences deepens the emotional resonance of the space, elevating the guest journey from a simple visit to a memorable encounter.

What trends are you seeing in architecture right now?

Sustainability remains at the forefront, with a strong focus on energy-efficient design, use of sustainable materials, and creating buildings that actively reduce their environmental footprint. There’s also a growing emphasis on wellness architecture, designing spaces that promote health, comfort, and well-being for the occupants.

Flexibility and adaptability are also taking centre stage, particularly in response to evolving work patterns, shifting lifestyles, and the need for future-proof environments. This design resilience ensures spaces remain relevant and functional over time, accommodating changing uses without compromising aesthetics or integrity.

In the hospitality sector, the focus continues to shift toward creating immersive, meaningful, and highly personalized guest experiences. Through carefully considered design, ranging from spatial sequencing and sensory engagement to localised materials and storytelling elements, hospitality environments are being reimagined as transformative journeys that connect guests more deeply to place and culture.
