Shanghai EXPO Place Recognised at WIN Awards 2025
Shanghai EXPO Place Mall has been honoured as a finalist in the category of ‘Retail Chains, Department Stores, and Shopping Centres Large & Small’ at World Interiors News (WIN) Awards 2025. This accolade recognises our sophisticated and thoughtful interior design concept, as well as the project’s vital contribution to commercial vitality.
The international jury praised EXPO Place as a “well-planned urban retail hub”, highlighting its clean, minimal and cohesive design. They also noted how the space’s flexibility allows it to adapt to evolving trends and user needs, while attention to detail fosters a welcoming atmosphere that enhances the overall spatial experience.
The jury further remarked, “The sunken plaza, rooftop café, and stepped terrace create layers of experience, while the open-plan layout enables shopping, dining, and cultural events to flow together seamlessly. The activations and artwork inject real energy and 'wow' moments, making it a destination that emphasises discovery and community just as much as retail.”
Spanning 320,000m2, the wider development includes a premium retail mall, two high-rise Grade A office towers with LEED Gold certification – with both interiors and commercial layouts designed by Benoy – along with two standalone multi-storey commercial buildings and a pair of luxurious boutique hotels.
Inspired by former Third Steel Plant previously on the site, we blended historical industrial references with modern aesthetics using bold geometry, textured walls, metallic materials, and clean lines of light – all of which pay homage to the site’s industrial past.
Our approach was to transform everyday interactions into unique experiences framed by architectural elements, imbuing the development with a philosophy of slow living within a bustling city.
We integrated mirrored and frosted stainless steel surfaces to cultivate an open and fluid atmosphere, while bridges link sequences of rooms to invite exploration and cultivate curiosity, elevating everyday experiences through form, material and light.
Congratulations to our clients, Shenshouren Investment and China Resources Land, along with our dedicated design team. This recognition underscores Shanghai EXPO Place Mall’s pivotal role in shaping the future of urban retail and cultural experiences in the city.
