挑战
As part of the Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) expansion, the Singapore Oceanarium Research and Learning Centre was envisioned as a new landmark for marine education and sustainability leadership.
The brief called for a design that would not only reflect RWS’s carbon neutrality goals but also offer a beacon for public learning and global collaboration—integrating cutting-edge sustainability with cultural resonance and architectural distinction.
解决方案
Situated along Sentosa’s coastline, the centre is designed as a “Lantern of Learning”—a sculptural volume that glows softly at night, visible from the Singapore mainland.
Inspired by the maritime history of the region, the façade blends soft horizontal illumination with earthy, granite-textured tones, evoking the spirit of Long Ya Men (龙牙门), or "Dragon’s Teeth Gate," which refers to the ancient granite outcrop once marking the entrance to Keppel Harbour. Internally, a triple-volume atrium and operable roof louvers harness the natural sea breeze, using passive ventilation and the stack effect to create a comfortable, energy-efficient environment.
结果
The 1,200 sqm centre serves as a hub for education, research, and community engagement—hosting seminars, immersive labs, and outreach activities within a flexible, open framework.
Designed by Benoy as a net-zero energy building, the project has achieved Green Mark Platinum Zero Energy certification, powered entirely by rooftop solar panels and shaped through passive environmental strategies. As part of the wider RWS masterplan, it stands as both a symbol of sustainability and a lighthouse for knowledge—bringing local heritage, architecture, and innovation into one cohesive vision.
