Wayfinding rooted in the material character of a historic campus
The West Downs Centre is the University of Winchester’s flagship building, is a gateway to the West Downs Quarter and the city of Winchester beyond. Designed by Design Engine the building increases the university’s teaching capacity by 20 per cent. The building’s weathering Corten steel fins and flint walling reference both the medieval walls of Winchester and the site’s historic character. Benoy was appointed to develop a wayfinding scheme that could unite the West Downs Centre with the wider campus, while articulating the university’s core values of compassion, individuality, and spirituality.

Materiality as the connecting thread
The scheme takes its cues from the horizontal detailing found across both old and new campus buildings, using that shared architectural language as the basis for a flexible sign structure that sits naturally within a historic setting. The choice of Corten steel as the primary finish for the sign family directly echoes the building’s own weathering steel cladding, a deliberate material continuity that gives the wayfinding a sense of belonging. Ancient stonework and contemporary steel coexist throughout the campus; the sign system holds that balance without forcing resolution between the two.
Typography and character
Bespoke pictograms bring personality to the sign family while working in concert with the university’s typeface, ensuring the system reads as a considered extension of the institutional identity. Bold use of colour reinforces the distinction between different zones and functions, creating legibility for a wide range of users from students and staff to visitors, across a complex, multi-component campus environment.
