Head in the clouds, feet on the ground
Nanjing Jianye Wuyue Plaza sits in the Hexi CBD, the second largest commercial district in East China. Developed by Seazen Holdings, the complex spans approximately 360,000m² in total, with 80,000m² of commercial space across six above-ground levels and three below ground. The programme includes a shopping centre, commercial boulevard, hotel, office tower and underground supermarket. Benoy provided retail planning and interior design throughout.

Nanjing brocade, rendered in light and form
The interior design concept draws on two sources: the cloud forms of classical Chinese art and the brocade textile tradition for which Nanjing is historically celebrated. Four key atriums are each differentiated by a distinct cloud shape, studies of natural cloud formations translated into architectural form. The motif extends through every level: suspended sculptures in the triple-height entrance void, clusters of circular mirrors in bathrooms, and sweeping ceiling louvres through the retail corridors, flowing like jet streams.
An underground street on the Qinhuai
The first basement level shifts register entirely. Designed around the theme of the New Qinhuai River, the space recreates an indoor Nanjing-style riverside street approximately 400m long, drawing on the character of one of the city’s most historically resonant waterways to create a distinctly local retail environment below ground.
