A heritage building on West Nanjing Road, redeveloped as a food-led plaza
MOSTA Plaza occupies a nearly century-old heritage building on Shanghai’s West Nanjing Road, within the Jing’an District’s Shanghai Historical Conservation Area. The site overlooks Nanjing West Road to the north, Taixing Road to the west and Wujiang Road Pedestrian Street to the south, with Zhang’s Garden, the largest surviving Shikumen complex in Shanghai, a few steps away. Benoy was appointed by Bright Food to redevelop the building as a food-led urban plaza.

A spiral atrium with floating volumes
The architecture is organised around a spiral-shaped central atrium that runs from the second basement up through the fifth floor. Inserted into the atrium are a series of “floating” volumes conceived as particles of light moving through the void, a reference to the client’s name, Bright Food. Planting wraps each volume, and the spiral plan offers different sightlines through the atrium from
every floor.
Food, retail and hotel programme
The new building will combine food retail, food-themed retail and a wider F&B programme across its five above-ground floors, with three basement levels operating as a retail podium connected underground to the existing Jing’an Ruitai Hotel. MOSTA Plaza is part of the wider conservation district around West Nanjing Road and Zhang’s Garden.
