Shining a light on experiential retail

Midtown is a new lifestyle-led retail and dining destination on Tahlia Street in Riyadh – a prominent thoroughfare in the bustling city. Benoy’s architectural design draws inspiration from Riyadh’s smooth desert sandstone landscapes to create a family-friendly destination that feels distinct yet familiar. External street F&B units extend the day into night while creating a unique destination and strong brand identity.

Working with site constraints

Using the narrow street frontage to our advantage, the design creates a sculpted, striking presence which leads to an elegant triple-height building. To achieve an immersive experience for visitors while bringing contrast and drama to the facade and landscape, the team paid special attention to lighting, flowing architectural forms and walkable public space.

Nature-inspired integrated lighting

Benoy worked closely with lighting consultants to extend Midtown’s liveliness into the evening, allowing the sculptural architecture to come alive after dark and create an immersive experience for visitors. Perforated backlit ceiling panels illuminate the three-storey retail buildings at night, creating the effect of a desert sky full of stars framing each level. Continuing the desert-inspired motifs along the Tahlia Street elevation, a line of concealed lighting on the vertical façade fins casts a warm ribbon of light across the dining outlets, evoking the silhouette of golden sand dunes.
