A mixed-use landmark on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao artificial island
The Zhuhai Shimao Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Port City Commercial and Cultural Centre occupies one of the most strategically significant sites in the Greater Bay Area, an artificial island at the junction of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao, connected to the mainland by the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge. Benoy won the commission through an international competition in June 2020. The development supports the ambition of a one-hour living circle across the three cities, reinforcing the island’s role as a commercial, cultural, and transit gateway.
A unified form beneath a futuristic roof
The programme encompasses a shopping mall, international-grade offices, a luxury hotel, a cultural centre, and an exhibition centre, arranged to connect the Zhuhai port to the south with the Coastal Plaza to the north. The hotel cluster takes advantage of waterfront views while office and exhibition functions sit adjacent to the transport hubs. A sweeping curved roof ties these blocks into a single, legible form, its rolling profile visible from the Lovers Road waterfront and from the flight paths above Macau Airport.
Three design dimensions
The design is organised around three core ideas. The first is the image established by the roof, a continuous gesture that gives the complex its identity at city scale. The second is a programme of topical themes giving each part its own character, drawing on vision, discovery, and the region’s future. The third is a science fiction-influenced atmosphere, with public spaces including a Moon Reflection Square, a Sea View Retreat Platform, an indoor sea view square, and an atrium shaped around a time tunnel.
