Shanghai’s East Railway Station air-rail interchange
The East Station Mixed-Use development is a super-large transit-oriented development (TOD) at Shanghai East Railway Station, a project that positions the station as the city’s eastern gateway for both rail and air passengers. Commissioned by Shanghai Lujiazui (Group) and designed by Benoy, the scheme integrates commercial, transit, and urban functions across a 1,050,000m² GFA programme, with a core urban design area of 500,000m² and a total capacity building area of 568,000m². The ambition is to establish a genuinely integrated air-rail and commercial transport complex.

The eastern gateway to Shanghai
The exterior design draws its formal language from the imagery of drifting clouds and flowing water, a fluid, large-scale architectural gesture that reflects the station’s significance as a point of arrival for visitors from across China and the world. The design emphasises inclusivity and civic welcome, framing Shanghai East Railway Station as a threshold into the city rather than purely a functional transit node.
Urban integration
The masterplan extends connectivity beyond the station boundary, making multiple connections to the surrounding urban area, including to land on the western side of the site designated for future development. The commercial layout takes full advantage of the hub location and the scale of the site, distributing uses to maximise both transit-related footfall and the development’s long-term urban contribution to eastern Shanghai.
