Challenge

One of the most hectic thoroughfares in Hong Kong, Des Voeux Road Central is home to constant vehicular traffic, a major tram line, and up to 8,000 pedestrians who pass through every hour. With the area often congested and prone to pollution, Benoy joined the campaign to help conceptually transform the road into a combined pedestrian-tram green zone that keeps the historic tram network intact and creates fluid movement.

Solution

Taking a multi-faceted approach to experiential street design, our concept focusses on delivering a connected and diversified series of experiences along the walkable 1.4km thoroughfare. The removal of vehicles gives true linear public space, reinforcing a more civic streetscape for pedestrians, whilst addressing the congestion and pollution issues. Using digital technologies and light projection, the concept also explores interactive installations.
