Benoy’s design, Central Plaza Rama 9, raises retail benchmark in Thailand

February 2012

International award-winning architects Benoy, is delighted to announce the completion of Central Plaza Rama 9, a new and exciting retail destination for Bangkok located at the intersection of Ratchada Phisek Road and Rama 9 Road.

Situated above the Rama 9 station, the new seven-storey retail centre and integrated office component comprise 80,000m² of integrated development space. The retail portion offers three distinctive and attractive zones of leisure, entertainment and flagship retail, with Central’s flagship fashion and lifestyle store, and Robinsons as the largest anchor.

Benoy took an organic approach to the design of the building. A series of sweeping curvilinear elements around the form create dynamic entrances, spaces for advertising and lighting effects and landscape, creating a bold statement for the exterior of Central Plaza Rama 9.

The organic design theme extends to the interior of the shopping centre. Sweeping curved void edges to fluid storefront lines all stimulate a fresh and inspired retail offer. Flowing lines follow through in the flooring patterns, ceiling designs and the balcony edge profile.

The play of light, material and colour create an inviting shopping ambience within Central Plaza Rama 9. Subtle colour-changing lighting highlights the interior elements whilst accentuating the form. Glass balustrades and profiled handrails add to the fresh look and feel.

Given its prime location, high traffic is anticipated for Central Plaza Rama 9 and efficient horizontal and vertical circulation within the centre was considered early in the design process by Benoy. Each level of the mall compliments the level below with similar retail offers, linked together with a series of escalators moving shoppers between the levels with ease.
