Benoy has recently celebrated the grand opening of the Experience Center for the Ningbo New World development. As the Masterplanner and Architect on the wider mixed-use scheme which covers approximately 800,000m2, Benoy was also appointed as the Architect for the prominent Experience Center building.
The Experience Center acts as a platform to showcase not only the commercial and retail functions of the development, but also the heritage of Ningbo’s Sanjiang culture over thousands of years, showing the past, present and future of the city.
The 2,000m2 building is located on an important junction on the site, at the point where the city’s three rivers meet. As such, the design concept follows this direction, bringing together the three themes, the past, present and future, into a singular form.
As one of the oldest trading ports in China, the city’s history has also been reflected in the design. Individual masses within the building resemble the hulls of the commercial trading boats which hold a strong connection to Ningbo. Locally significant materials such as brick and bamboo have also been used to capture the city’s architectural heritage through a modern interpretation.
