Benoy Helps Shape Hong Kong’s First School for Autism

29 June 2013

Benoy, international award-winning Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is honoured to celebrate the grand opening of Hong Kong’s first school for children with Autism this month. Benoy’s dedicated team has had the privilege of contributing pro bono Interior Design, Graphic Design and Technical Support to the Aoi Pui School’s new site in Hung Hom, Hong Kong.

Benoy has been involved with the redevelopment of the former Autism Partnership School since 2011 when a new site for the school was identified. Requiring considerable renovation due to its dilapidated state, Benoy’s team undertook the interior renovation from both a design and technical outlook, working with local contractors to deliver new class rooms, teaching facilities, staff offices, a reception suite and an undercover playground within the building. Ultimately the new site and refurbishments will allow for an important increase in future student intakes.

Creating a nurturing and cheerful environment, the school interiors have been redesigned with warm colours and tactile features with playful colour boxed walls and fabric wallpapers and partitions. Graphic designs have woven a spirited theme throughout the building, highlighting spaces with colourful bird and flower motifs. The reception, an important place for families, is a calm space. Visitors are welcomed by the eye-catching flora and fauna theme which is accentuated, this time, by a soft white colour palette.

Aoi Pui School caters for families who cannot find appropriate primary educational placements for their children with Autism. Since opening in 2007, the charitable school has helped more than 100 students in transitioning to regular or assisted school placements and improving their Autism deficit skills.

Benoy’s Divisional Director, Dean Bailey, who has been involved in the project since conception, commented: ‘Benoy absolutely thrives on being able to give back to the communities it works in. We are especially delighted to be involved with the Aoi Pui School and their remarkably generous venture in providing crucial education for their students in Hong Kong’.

Autism Partnership Foundation Founder, Toby Mountjoy, added: ‘Benoy has helped create a wonderful new environment for our students. They have collaborated with us every step of the way and we are delighted that the Benoy Team has been a part of this fulfilling journey with us’.
